Skills

IT industry includes ingenious tools, platforms, and languages that will be required to complete various projects and processes. You can learn about different skills and see how they can contribute to your project. We offer our expertise in the following areas.

You may not be familiar with the tools and technical terms the website development agency uses when they explain the scope of your project or ask your requirements. You might find it hard to keep up with the jargons a web designer will tell you for your mobile friendly design. Here is a list of all such tools and skills that you may come across in this industry and that we are well proficient at. Developers and designers at The Next Idea take pride in dealing with all these skills efficiently and offering a collective experience of over a decade under these services.

What is Web Development?

Adobe Illustrator

Adobe illustrator is most widely used for vector based and graphic design work. This tool is inevitable in the graphic field and no one can deny its significance. However, the tool is also very effective in some area of the web design. The web is going through several significant changes and so is the role of illustrator in designing the workflow of your websites.

Role Of Adobe Illustrator In Web Design

Ever since the industry shifted from print to web, programmers and web designers are having a hard time keeping up with the fast pacing technology. Adobe illustrator played a vital role and helped the designers continue working with the tools they were familiar with

Traditional Web Design Work Flow

In the good old days, things were not that complex. Competition was low, tools were simpler, technology was still evolving and we all had that margin of error that we could get away with. The workflow consisted of simple steps like:

  • Design
  • Proofing (by the client)
  • Modifications (a few usually)
  • Print ready and web ready files

The process seemed simple to think of but when applying it practically, it was a drastic journey for the designers. They had to aim for a pixel perfect design even without having a plan or a rough draft from the very first day. Working with PSD’s was easier because the designer had the opportunity to improve his work until the last minute without putting it up on the web or testing it for mobile screens.

The process did come with major gaps that had to be addressed. This eventually led to the need and birth of Responsive web design. If you have been in the web design or IT industry in any manner, you would probably be aware with this term Responsive web design that gained popularity over the past decade and became a must for websites now in 2016. (Web design trends 2016)

A responsive web design is liquid and flexible so that it adjusts automatically to the screen it is being accessed on. With the increase in the users accessing the web with a mobile device on the go, it has become essential for every business to present an existence that responds well to their needs and understands their commands.

Now this shift in the trend changes the traditional design work flow we have just discussed above. This is because you have to create proofs and demos for all screens before you present it to the client. The client might want to experiment several things across different platforms or screens and you would be almost stuck. Even though web designers have decided the standard screen resolutions for ease but the truth is there are not standard sizes because we do not have three, four or five sizes rather there are trillions of devices out there, each with a different screen.

Working with Adobe illustrator

Adobe illustrator gives the designers the liberty to stick to their traditional tool that they are comfortable working with and still adapt to new requirements. It is irreplaceable especially when you have to come up with a logo built from scratch for your business or have print files in high resolutions.

Use Adobe Illustrator To Create A Clean Website Layout

The problem with the old workflow is that it has some restrictions and we need to move in a logical order to save time and efforts both. Adobe illustrator can aid this process for web designers across the world. Here is a more logical and modular workflow instead that you can follow using Adobe Illustrator

Wireframes

Wireframes can make your task simpler in so many ways that I would say it is still underrated. People think maybe they are wasting their time and the designer is just playing around with dumb tools and not able to deliver what they desire. However, you need to understand that a wireframe is the skeleton of your design. They can be simple as nothing and complicated to the most depending upon the workflow and structure. However, it should be the first step to any design process

Aesthetics

This defines how the appearance of elements in your design is. The colors you will use and why you will use them, branding, typography, infographics, and tone of the project, textures and even the voice of your design. This is important because each project is unique and has its own basic message

Prototypes

You will use the information you have gathered and decided in the previous steps to build your prototype. This is a browser based model that shows how your design will appear on the browser and across different screens. You may use bootstrap or other responsive design tools to get help with this phase

The idea of splitting the entire design process in to these steps and modules is benefiting because client can give their feedback at each stage. You will not have to go back and forth with the process if everything is decided from the day first and the client has been notified throughout the process. You will not have to make huge changes in detailed components of the final design if you follow a logical procedure like this.

The Role Of Adobe Illustrator In Modular Workflow

So far we have explained both traditional and modular workflow for web design. The question is that how a web designer can use illustrator to achieve ideal results without having to change his basic tool that he is used to work with

Wireframes are usually line work means they use vectors. There cannot be a better match then adobe illustrator to do that. It is maybe the best and easiest tool you can use to create simple or complicated wireframes including tons of varieties

You can get the best out of symbols and simplify the process for yourself in a constructive manner. Designers can drag and drop files using adobe illustrators, make changes over the board and set entire regions as symbols. If you do this with header, footer, comments and other similar sections, you can save chunks of time for yourself.

Using Typography In Adobe Illustrator

Typography will never get old or go out of trend in the designing process whether for print or web. This can make your design deliver a clear and convenient message if you use typography in the right manner. Using adobe illustrator you can play with several elements in typography and adjust their size, font, weight etc. accordingly.

Adobe Illustrator and Creative Cloud

Web designers have seen adobe improve and update for their betterment. The typekit is a super feature that is integrated into several applications that can leverage the design process. You can use the adobe illustrator for selecting several web fonts and add the detail to your wireframes.

The last thing we would discuss on the topic of wireframes and adobe illustrator is the multiple artboards. You can check different pages, resolutions, states and much more within the same document. You can ask the web designer to give you a PDF of the artboards for easy understanding and presentation.

Web Design and Vectors

Well this one might come as a surprise to you but you can thank Apple for this. The practice was their in small fractions and at smaller scales before them but they were the first to make retina display concept mainstream. Viewers could not be happier because they were getting a super experience but web designers had something to worry about as their designs were pixelating on the new screen.

This was new because no one had expected websites to behave and be interpreted in this manner before.

Web browsers can interpret and understand vectors well now if the designer uses Scalable vector graphics called SVGs. This makes it simpler like the bitmaps to output vector artwork to the browser. They are XML based so you can check them in code editor and play around as much as you like. This allows web designers to hide images in the same files for better optimization

Adobe illustrator and resolution independence

This one is important because vectors play an important role in the resolution independence. The good part is that adobe illustrator is a vector tool and we can do much more with it. Here is how

Icons and Webfonts

Iconography is the essence of web designing and something a true designer lives by. Every web designer realizes and remembers the time having tons of icon gallery in their storage devices and that has been made possible with adobe illustrator

The colossal and brilliant Fugue icon set

As we have discussed the responsive design and the modular workflow for web design, it is not possible to use bitmap icons anymore. We use web fonts and display them as type. This gives the ease of access and usability to the designer. You can use several services to upload SVG icons, character mapping and output all of this as a web font

Even this trick is applicable to logo designing where you can map series of characters for the web browser

Adobe illustrator perspective

Adobe has recently made an announcement for the upgrade they are introducing for adobe illustrator. This also mentions of the creative cloud and the CSS Export that designers and programmers are waiting to see. Even though Photoshop already has this a built in feature or as an extension in the older versions but they thought of it as a necessary element for adobe illustrator as well. Web designers will be able to stick to their favorite tool and display elements in the form of CSS and paste in the code editor.

Even though adobe has a few new products lined up in their inventory but adobe illustrator will never lose the importance it has and for a few nothing will ever be as much rewarding and comforting. Web designers who have a loyalty with adobe illustrator are not ready to give it up and wait for more upgrades from Adobe for the tool to adaptable for all

Summarizing Adobe Illustrators role in web design

Web designers need to realize that true potential of adobe illustrator is beyond website comps and basic graphics. They can apply the tool in an efficient manner and in a greater scope. The importance of adobe illustrator is undeniable in the field of graphic designing but it can even be made more useful following the modular work flow for web designs and embracing new strategies

It is a both to and from process and is most efficient for trading data with the server and making updates on a web page without having to reload the entire page. Programmers understand that Ajax is by far the most generic way of naming several JavaScript techniques that are used to connect dynamically to a web server without having to load many pages. It is the use of XmlHttpRequest objects to communicate dynamically with a web server using JavaScript.

Benefits of Ajax

Programmers around the web are comfortable using Ajax in web development due to several reasons. The most important of them being the benefits Ajax gives in terms of callbacks, increased speed and user friendliness

To describe it further, here are top 4 benefits of using Ajax during coding

Call backs

The major function of Ajax is to perform a callback. In simpler terms, a callback is when you make a quick trip to or from the server without having to post the complete page back, in order to post or fetch any data from the server. This means that your operations occur quickly and the efficiency of utilizing the network increases. You do not have to call for a complete postback rather improve the performance of the network by using minimum bandwidth. In most cases, the data sending or receiving from the server is minimal so you do not actually require the entire page to load and increase the burden on the server, especially in the case where you have restricted bandwidth. This saves the effort on the server and the client end by minimizing the elements that have to be reloaded, fetched or posted instead of processing the entire web page for a small request

Making Asynchronous Calls

An asynchronous call is when the browser does not wait for all the data to arrive unless the user calls for an action. It pre-loads necessary elements for the user to see them when needed

User-Friendly

This is a benefit that comes innate with Ajax because it reduces the time required to load by avoiding a complete postback. This means that the web page will always be more responsive and fast loading. This in turn accounts for the most important element for user friendliness and makes a great user experience

Increased Speed

As mentioned above, using Ajax allows you to reduce the burden to and from the server. This also means that it helps increase the performance, speed and usability of a web page or application. To understand it better, Netflix can be a great example. The movie rating feature uses Ajax so whenever a user rates a movie, it is saved to his personal rating without loading the entire web page or refreshing it. These ratings are saved directly to the server without having to reload the page

Technical Aspects of Ajax

So far we understand that Ajax callbacks can be done using XMLHttpRequest object on the client side JS. This is used to call web pages and web services (server-side objects) directly. The pages and web services can either save the data or return it based on the request being made.

Originally Ajax was the acronym for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. Asynchronous is a technical term that means that several events are occurring without dependency on each other. This means that the user does not have to wait for the web server to respond and process the request after calling for a callback. Once the request is processed, the server will automatically send a response to the user and he can then process it as he likes.

Advancements in Ajax

Well this is obvious that Ajax has evolved in many ways ever since it was first used. The case is same for every technology related product or tool. As the web progresses, professional developers and companies find ways of reducing their efforts and improving the user experience to the max. JavaScript is a client side programming language and JSON is a markup language to define data using JS. JSON stands for JavaScript Object Notation. It is better to use with JavaScript as compared to the traditional XML. Web services are using more of JSON instead of XML along with Ajax and JavaScript.

One other notable thing about JS and Ajax is the object library commonly known as jQuery. jQuery is a free open

Another major advance to JavaScript and Ajax is the JavaScript object library called jQuery. This free, open-source software is a wrapper around JavaScript. jQuery is used to easily write client-side JavaScript to navigate and manipulate a page and make asynchronous Ajax callbacks.

To design and develop effective web applications, the use of jQuery along with JSON web services has become a popular practice to create Ajax callbacks.

Also the Ajax Control Toolkit is a rich suite of controls developed by Microsoft . It is integrated in to the visual studio and you can easily drag and drop it to web forms similar to html and server controls. These controls are specifically created for callbacks in Ajax. But the good part is that you can also use them for client and server controls on a usual basis. A good example would be considering the case of ASP.net . It does not come with the tabs controls but you can use the Ajax control Toolkit . The tab control works fine to postback similarly like server controls.

Where to use Ajax

Ideally, Ajax should be used on a web application or service where little pieces of information can be easily fetched or posted to the server without having to load entire pages. Consider the case of data validation and save actions. If you have change the values in a drop down menu on a web page, it should not call for an entire postback page load rather simply use Ajax to do so. The values can automatically change based on the input that the user is going to give. This makes the process simpler, faster, easier and enhances the usability for the user. Imagine having to wait for a complete reload each time you change the option in the drop down list and you will realize what it means to have Ajax.

The other notable example is when a user will save or fetch session values from the server, the server will show the data based on the user preferences for height, width or positioning of the objects. This means that the server adjusts the session variable for the new width and whenever the page is reloaded, the serve will adjust the width based on the session variable. If this is not the case, then the object will go back to its default width

Other features worth mentioning are text hints and autocomplete text boxes. When using the search feature on a website for instance, you type a few letters and the search box suggests you possible searches relevant to that. While searching for a movie name, music video or buying a product for an ecommerce store, you will often see the autocomplete option. This superb feature is only possible because of Ajax and could not have been done otherwise. This includes performing a callback to the web service that will retrieve all the values in the database that have these characters in the start

At The Next Idea we use Ajax to solve problems for clients that have limited bandwidth or location issues. The errors that arise due to page load can often increase the bounce rate on your site so you need to make sure your project is well coded and programmed. Sometimes the web server does not even have enough resources to tackle the timeout and the request. In such a case, it is best to look for an expert and get a quick help with your project

It is getting even challenging because of the rise of the mobile devices and the need to create responsive and liquid layouts for different screen resolutions. If you are not using or familiar with bootstrap CSS as of now, you might never be able to create a formula (to code each of your projects) that is flexible, matches latest trends and responds well to all the mobile devices and screen resolutions. If you are not using or familiar with bootstrap CSS as of now, you might never be able to create a formula (to code each of your projects) that is flexible, matches latest trends and responds well to all the mobile devices and screen resolutions.

What is Bootstrap CSS?

Bootstrap CSS is a collection of free tools that can aid you in creating websites and web based applications. Commonly known as bootstrap responsive it contains ready to use templates for buttons, interface elements, typography and forms along with extensions of JavaScript.

Every client wants the best design for their website which is sleek, elegant, catchy, professional and yet responsive to various mobile devices and screen types. Most of the times, however, you have to give up one thing to get the other, because a fancy layout may not be user friendly. Developers have created and use several CSS frameworks for easy customization and flexibility. Lately after the “mobile first” revolution, bootstrap 3 or bootstrap CSS has become most popular and widely used of all the other CSS frameworks.

It is easy to use and customize with most platforms like Joomla 3 and LESS.

Why bootstrap CSS?

Even though there is much hype around bootstrap twitter and its use as bootstrap responsive, you still need to know why bootstrap CSS framework is important for you and your projects. We have expert bootstrap developers who can add that flare to your projects which is necessary for a major mobile audience.

The major reasons why developers prefer using bootstrap CSS are as follows
  • Easy to use
  • Gridding system
  • HTML base styling
  • Extensive list of components
  • Additional plugins for Java script
  • Documentation
  • Bootstrap twitter

Easy to get started

Every front end developer must learn CSS pre-processing whether or not they use it. Some developers even use the same old style of managing Cascading Style Sheets. The best part about bootstrap CSS is that it offers LESS files for those who know how to use pre-processing and plain old CSS for developers who are not familiar with or accustomed to pre-processing.

You can download bootstrap 3 (download bootstrap 3 here) and save it to the head of your HTML doc s that you can use it freely with each code along with JS plugins

Gridding system

Bootstrap responsive is an effective and most widely used tool for liquid layouts because it is built on 12-column grids, layouts and parts. You can decide in seconds whether you want a fixed layout or responsive. Using bootstrap CSS you can adjust to both fixed and fluid width designs using nesting and offsetting.

Mobile screens usually have lesser space so you get the opportunity to hide less important content and decide the content prioritization for the most important information to appear on these screens using bootstrap responsive . If you are custom coding, you might find it handy to hide and manage content for different screens but with bootstrap it is a matter of using fixed classes in no time.

Base styling and HTML elements

Each web project is unique for the clients but developers understand that there are base components that are redundant and impossible to survive without. Imagine getting variations of these elements like tables, forms, headings, typography and buttons ready to use with enhanced classes. You get a variety of choices in the following HTML elements

  • Buttons
  • Images
  • Icons
  • Typography
  • Code
  • Tables
  • Forms

Extensive list of components

Advancements in technology are making it easier for people to simplify their tasks and reduce the time consumption. Programmers are not left behind; bootstrap CSS lets you choose from a large variety of drop down menus, pop up alerts, pagination and other important components. If you are familiar with LESS, then it will take only a few minutes to customize the themes for various projects.

You will find the following components pre styled with bootstrap CSS:

  1. Button groups
  2. Navigation bars
  3. Labels
  4. Badges
  5. Breadcrumbs
  6. Progress bars
  7. Alerts

Additional plugins for JavaScript

In the bootstrap responsive package you will get to easily use several drop down menus with JavaScript plugins. For instance, you need sliders; accordions and tabs in your project then you do not need to test different range of tools. You can simply add a few coded lines through bootstrap CSS.

The components such as drop down menu are made interactive with the numerous JavaScript plugins bundled in the bootstrap package. The customization option allows you to limit the number of functionalities so that you can keep the file size minimum and easy to load

Documentation

What you will love about bootstrap CSS apart from styling for web apps and sites is the fact that it gives awesome documentation with samples and demo for you to understand without much technical knowledge. It is one of the richest and most beneficial tools ever developed in the history of the web.

Bootstrap twitter

By now you are already familiar of the fact that bootstrap CSS is a front end development framework used for building responsive websites and web apps in lesser time and with lesser efforts. Developed by the team of Twitter, bootstrap twitter comes with built-in features and enhanced classes like those discussed above. The only criticism against the framework is that all web projects tend to look similar in certain aspects but skilled developers can modify the styling in any way possible.

Bootstrap twitter is your one and complete answer in the field of responsive layouts and mobile first screens. It contains combinations of HTML, CSS and JavaScript plugins to make user friendliness possible to the max. Bootstrap3 supports CSS3 and HTML5 both

Whether you have a website up and running or going to start one from scratch you definitely need a mobile friendly and responsive layout. Even though you might be happy with the current results but once you use bootstrap CSS for one of your projects, you will wonder why you never tried it before or why dint someone introduce you to bootstrap CSS earlier.

However, as the web evolves with customer needs, the languages also need updates and improvements. CSS3 is the latest update of CSS which is divided into modules. It includes the old CSS specifications as well as has some new amazing features. Here are some important features of CSS3

  1. Selectors
  2. Text Effects
  3. 2D/3D transitions
  4. Animations
  5. User interface
  6. Multiple column layout
  7. Image values and replaced content
  8. Backgrounds and Borders
  9. Box Model

The good part about these features or modules is that there properties are easily applicable in modern web browsers. In the beginning, it was not compatible with all the major browsers, which created a lot of hype in the IT world. The browser makers realized what they were missing and started adding CSS3 support as well. Owing to the modularized specification in CSS3 it is easier for the browsers to include its support without performing any major refactoring in the codebase. This modularization makes it easy to document the specs as well as makes the process easier and simpler

CSS3 and HTML5 both are an ideal combination that will shape the future of the web. It is now must for websites and apps to be coded with these latest tools in order to stay ahead of the competition. Further, we will discuss the features of CSS3 in detail and how they have changed the way programmers used older versions like CSS2

CSS3 Selectors

The first feature worth discussing is the selectors in CSS3. It does not at all mean that CSS has said goodbye to the good old selectors of CSS2 rather it comes with a combination of the older ones and adding some new ones. Web programmers can choose DOM elements owing to their attributes. This means that a programmer does not need to specify the ID or class for each element individually; rather he can use the attribute field to style all of them.

The new CSS3 selector feature makes it easy to style various elements on any web page easily.

CSS3 Rounded Corners

Every designer wants rounded corners to improve the presentation of his web design. They look pretty amazing but it requires tons of effort and lengthy lines of code to create a well-rounded corner. With any change in the content, the height, width and position will have to be adjusted accordingly. This has to be done carefully to make sure corners are not disturbed.

This problem can be easily tackled using the border radius property in CSS3. You do not have to write all the code and still get a proper rounded corner effect. This aids programmers in variety of ways because they can use the rounded corners in certain parts of a website.

If you are still not sure how you will benefit from this feature, think of it like not having to include any external images or using any JavaScript code for positioning the images. If you have the border-radius property, your task is going to be made simpler and easier.

CSS3 Border Image

One other important addition in the latest CSS3 version is that it gives you the ability to swap borders and images. This is called the border-image property and it can enable you to show an image instead of a plain solid border. Isn’t that exciting?

CSS3 Box Shadow

A box shadow gives you the ability to create a drop shadow for any element. Usually a web designer or programmer will have to create a repeated image around the element to give this effect. However, with CSS3 you can easily create a box shadow simply by entering one line of code. W3C first removed this feature from the CSS3 latest update but then again added it to the new version

CSS3 Text Shadow

Similar to the box shadow, the text shadow is something where you can add drop shadows to the text you enter on the web page. The practice was done earlier by creating a replica of the text and then positioning it in a way that it appears to be a shadow. However, CSS3 has made this easier by introducing the feature text shadow where you can achieve the same purpose without much effort

CSS3 Gradient

Every designer realizes the importance of gradient technique in smart and sleek web designs. However, if not executed properly, the gradient technique can make it a headache for the designers. Sometimes a designer will have to use an entire image to create the gradient effect in the background. This ultimately increases the page loading time. However, with CSS3 you get a built in feature for gradient

CSS3 RGBA: Color, Now with Opacity

If you are a CSS user, you would already know the RGB property that allows you to set colors for various elements. However, CSS3 takes it to the next level where you have added opacity to these colors. You can now simply change the opacity of elements without much trouble using the Red Green Blue Alpha channels now abbreviated as RGBA

CSS3 Transform (Element Rotation)

This is one of my favorites in CSS3 properties because it lets you rotate elements on a web page. The property is called transform and you can rotate any element without having to change the JavaScript. You get several JavaScript plugins and extensions on the web to do the element rotation on web but CSS3 will have this as an innate feature

CSS3 Multi column Layout

This is an important one owing to the responsive web designs and the concept of liquid designs for mobile screens. All the latest web designs include some sort of columns and boxes for content prioritization or for the sake of good art. It can get tiresome for the programmer to adjust each of these columns for a responsive layout and for several mobile devices. With CSS3, you can specify the number of columns using the multi column layout and it will make your work a lot easier

Webkit browsers and Firefox support this feature as of now

CSS3 Web Fonts

This is an important one owing to the responsive web designs and the concept of liquid designs for mobile screens.
